2025 University of Alberta Vanier Scholarship Eligibility Criteria

To be accepted as a scholar in the University of Alberta Vanier Scholarship, you must:

  • Be a full-time student of a doctoral program no later than January 2026.
  • Be recommended by one of the Canadian institutions;
  • Be running their first doctoral degree (which includes joint programs such as MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, or JD/PhD, MBA/PhD – if it has shown a significant research component);
  • Preparing to run, in the summer semester or the academic session following the declaration of results, full-time doctoral (or a joint graduate research program such as MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, JD/PhD, MBA/PhD) studies and research at the recommending institution; For joint graduate research programs, only the PhD part of the program is qualified for funding.
  • Must have finished no more than 20 months of full-time study in the doctoral program as of May 1, 2025;
    • The doctoral program would commence after the finishing of a master’s degree. The months of study completed are calculated from the doctoral registration date.
  • Must have finished no more than 32 months of full-time study in the doctoral program (i.e., joint graduate research program, directly from bachelor’s, formerly enlisted without having a master’s degree, conveying or unable to complete the program), by May 1, 2025 if:
    • Registered in a joint graduate research program, e.g., MD/PhD, MA/PhD, MS/PhD, DVM/PhD. Candidates in this category have access to the 32-month grace whether or not they were formerly registered in a master’s program:
      • The periods of learning are intended to start from the date on which a student is officially registered in the joint graduate program. (For MA/PhD or MS/PhD, this will be the master’s enrollment date).
    • Applied directly from a bachelor’s to a PhD program (without having been formally registered in another graduate program);
      • The months of learning completed are planned from the doctoral registration date.
    • Formally registered in a master’s program without having the degree, transferring or retracting from the program, and subsequently starting a doctoral program.
      • The period of learning completed is calculated from the original master’s registration date.
  • Must have earned a first-class average (GPA of at least 3.5 on the U of A grading scale) in each of the last two years of full-time study (or equivalent)
  • Do not have, or have, a doctoral-level scholarship or fellowship from CIHR, NSERC, or SSHRC to commit or finish a doctoral program.
  • Candidates who identify as a native (First Nation, Inuit, and/or Métis) are highly recommended to apply. The U of A may accept candidates who wish to identify as native without those recommendations being counted towards the university quota.
